Ongoing:
Scholarships: $600 provides one young woman the opportunity to attend and board at St. Anne's for one year. If you would like to sponsor a young woman and help her achieve her dreams of a high school education, or if you would like to contribute a different amount towards a scholarship fund please
contact us or
donate to Friends of St. Anne’s.
Science Lab: Our current major project is building, furnishing and equipping a science lab. Currently the girls walk several kilometers to another school to use a science lab. The Board of Governors at St. Anne’s submitted a proposal detailing construction costs of approximately $20,000 for this project. Funds raised during 2011 were used to build the structure.
Funds raised at the April 22, 2012 gala will help complete this project.

Solar Energy: Friends of St. Anne’s is working with World Energy Project, a non-profit organization established by engineering students at the University of Nebraska whose mission is to provide alternate and more reliable energy sources in developing countries. Several of the group went to Mali in June 2011 to install a solar energy system for a women’s and children’s hospital. Before returning to the United States, one of the group traveled to Kapkemich to conduct an initial assessment of St. Anne’s and to define the scope of the project.

Future:
Art and Music Classroom: The Board of Directors for the Friends of St. Anne’s is working closely with the Board of Governors of St. Anne’s School to define future projects. One project under consideration is the construction of music and art classrooms
Completed:
Library: As of early March 2011, the library pictured below was completed including the installation of wiring for future electricity. The building of the library engendered a relationship with the World Energy Project. Partnering with this non-profit organization based in Omaha, Nebraska, sparks hope for installing solar energy panels to provide electricity to the library and other buildings at St. Anne’s. The other project tied to the library is the book drive, currently underway.

Book Drive: As we all know, the more we read, the more we learn. Therefore, a book and school supplies drive was completed in October 2011. Students from Shawnee Mission West and Leavenworth High Schools donated their time and energy to help categorize and pack the books in preparation for shipping. Books came in from individual donors, donors from Shawnee Mission West and Leavenworth High Schools, from local friends of library organizations (Johnson County and Olathe Public Libraries) and from local Half Price Book Stores. Without the generous donations of so many individuals and organizations this book drive wouldn’t have been possible.

Container Shipment/Delivery: The books collected during the book drive were loaded onto a 40 ft shipping container along with musical instruments, sports equipment, science lab glassware and equipment, school and art supplies and miscellaneous other items the school could use. Thanks to the generous donation from the mission arm of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Eucharist in Independence, Missouri the cost of shipping the container from Kansas City to the port in Mombasa, Kenya was covered. Friends of St. Anne’s Girls’ School covered the cost of shipping from the port to the school.

Electrical Power: Government-provided electricity had been brought to the center of Kapkemich but not to the school. Therefore, funds were provided to wire the school and bring electrical power to the school. The girls spend about 3 hours every night studying so having adequate lighting makes this easier.
Since the government-provided electricity is costly and not very reliable, our project to install solar energy continues.
Computer/Printer: Fr. Anthony recently traveled to Kapkemich for a month-long visit with his family and friends. Friends of St. Anne’s provided funds for the purchase a computer and printer for the school, which he presented to them during a special celebration.
